Beyond Our Own

We rush to fill our empty hands,
To chase the things we think we need,
While someone near us silently
Is drowning underneath.
We speak of all our troubles loud,
Yet never stop to see
The weight another person bears,
The pain they hide quietly.
Each heart has battles, needs, and fears,
Each soul its private fight.
The one we overlook today
May need our care tonight.
So pause before you turn away,
Before your needs take hold.
A little kindness, time, and grace
Can warm a heart gone cold.
For life is not just “me” and “mine,”
But “you” and “we” as well—
And sometimes just a listening heart
Can save the one who fell.
